Many water sports enthusiasts have been surprised that they sometimes had to wait for a bridge that wouldn’t open. The reason is simple: in the past, the operating staff took short breaks. This happened twice a day, between 12:00 and 13:00 and between 16:15 and 17:15 .
Fortunately, this has largely changed. Nowadays, most bridges and locks in Friesland are operated continuously , including on Sundays and public holidays. This has been made possible following intensive consultations between the province, municipalities, and water sports companies. Municipalities that are not yet participating expect to be able to offer this soon. The bridge and lock operators are positive about the new schedule.
Fixed operating times for bridges and locks
When sailing through the canals of Friesland, you will inevitably encounter bridges and locks. Generally, these are readily operated for water sports enthusiasts.
April 1 – November 1: 9:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.
June through August: 9:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Some bridges still have a short lunch break:
9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. | 1:00 p.m. – 4:15 p.m. | 5:15 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
General Rules for Bridges and Locks
- Line up behind other waiting boats when approaching a bridge or lock.
- Pass through quickly as soon as the bridge opens.
- At busy bridges: lower the mast if possible.
- Always follow the instructions of the operating personnel.
- If there is heavy road traffic, water traffic may be held up before the bridge or lock opens.
By following these rules, you’ll enjoy a safe and pleasant boat trip through Friesland.
