Surrounded by the Poelen and the Sneekermeer lies the picturesque island village of Terherne,
, accessible only via a single road with two bridges that connect the village to the outside world:
An island in the Frisian lakes
This enclave in the heart of the Frisian lake district has existed for nearly a thousand years. A sand ridge, known as the Gravinneweg, was an ideal place for fishermen and boatmen to settle. Later, the Komelkers joined them—small-scale farmers who used barges to harvest grass and hay from the islets in the Terhernster and Terkaplester Poelen. Around 1960, a new lock was built on the Sneekermeer side. In the process, part of the sand ridge was excavated, creating the beach at Terherne.
The residents of Terherne have long welcomed guests, water sports enthusiasts, campers, and vacation home guests.

All kinds of activities are organized throughout the year:
Easter Monday
Easter Monday traditionally marks the opening of the water sports season. All businesses open their doors to provide information, offer test rides, and host fun activities.
The Briorace
In early May, the Briorace—the famous 60-kilometer sailing race for open sailboats—takes place.
SKS Skûtsjesilen
In late July or early August, two races of the SKS skûtsjesilen (the oldest skûtsje sailing races) take place on the Sneekermeer.
Children’s Book Day
Children’s Book Day is held on the first Sunday in October. Fun activities are organized, all related to reading and children’s books.
Merkesilen and Preamsilen
In September, the Merkesilen and Preamsilen—sailing pram races—will take place. You can experience the action firsthand on a boat from Yachtcharter Wetterwille.
Taste the Art
During the autumn holidays, there is the “Taste the Art” route. Tastings in all restaurants, art throughout the village, and music in the streets.

Chameleon Village
But to many, Terherne is primarily known as the Chameleon Village,
based on the famous Kameleon books by Hotze de Roos,
with the famous Kameleon farm and adventure island.
