Boating Routes: Yacht Charter in Friesland
Explore Friesland by boat using a variety of boating routes!
Several beautiful boating routes take you past the most picturesque spots in Friesland. There’s plenty to choose from: take, for example, the Turf Route through Southeast Friesland, the historic Middelseeroute, the Aqueduct Route through Southwest Friesland, the Lits-Lauwers route between Dokkum and Drachten, or the Staandemastroute in central Friesland. New this year is the Woudaaproute—with this route, the whole family can enjoy the Frisian Lakes!
Don’t forget to get off the boat every now and then to experience some fun things on shore! There are many places where you can dock your boat, whether just to stretch your legs or to go exploring.

As you sail through the canals of Friesland, you’ll inevitably encounter bridges and, at times, locks.
In general, bridges and locks are happy to accommodate water sports. The regular operating hours for bridges and locks in Friesland from April 1 through November 1 are from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
From June through August, the bridges and locks are even operated until 8:00 p.m.
Some bridges still have lunch breaks. During these breaks, the operating hours are as follows:
9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
1:00 p.m. to 4:15 p.m.
5:15 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
There are a number of general rules that apply when passing bridges and locks in Friesland.
– When approaching bridges and locks, you are expected to line up behind the other waiting boats.
– Once the bridge is open, proceed quickly.
– At busy bridges, lower your mast if possible.
– Always follow the instructions of the operating personnel.
– If there is heavy road traffic, water traffic will be held before the bridge or lock is opened.
