Boating in Friesland in the spring offers unique advantages: quiet waterways, lower prices, nature in full bloom, and flexible booking options. The period from early April through June combines pleasant boating weather with fewer crowds than during the high season. With the right clothing and preparation, spring is often an ideal time for a boating vacation.

Many people automatically think of July and August when planning a boating vacation. Yet by doing so, they’re missing out on a special time of year: spring. After 20 years of welcoming guests at Yachtcharter Wetterwille, we’ve noticed a clear trend. More and more experienced boaters are deliberately choosing April, May, or early June.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through everything you need to know about boating in Friesland in the spring. What kind of weather can you expect? What clothes should you pack? Which routes are the most scenic during this time of year?

Why Spring Is the Ideal Time for Boating

Spring scores higher than the peak season in five key areas.

Peace on the Water

In April and May, the water is peaceful. The crowds are about 50 to 60 percent smaller than during the summer months. That means no traffic jams at the locks, no crowded docks, and above all: no rushed atmosphere. For novice boaters, this is worth its weight in gold. Alexander, who has 20 years of experience in boat rentals, says: “In the spring, you simply learn the ropes better. You have the freedom to make mistakes without stress.”

Better Availability

During peak season, popular weeks are often fully booked months in advance. In the spring, that pressure isn’t there. You can often still reserve a boat two to three weeks in advance. Plus, weekend or midweek bookings are possible—ideal if you can’t take a whole week off.

Price advantage

Boating in the spring is more affordable than in July or August. April and early May fall within the C and D seasons. The price difference compared to the high season can be as much as 20 to 25 percent. For a family, that quickly adds up to several hundred euros that you can spend on fun activities along the way.

Nature at Its Best

April and May are the months when Friesland comes to life. Willows sprout their first pale green leaves, fruit trees are in bloom, and you’ll see young animals everywhere. In nature reserves like De Alde Feanen, spring is perhaps the highlight of the year. Bird migration is in full swing, and the silence is broken only by the sounds of nature.

What to expect: weather and boating conditions

The big question: What’s the weather actually like in the spring? The honest answer: it’s unpredictable, but often surprisingly nice.

April is a capricious month. You can have days with temperatures of 14 degrees and plenty of sunshine, but also chilly mornings of 8 degrees. The biggest challenge is the wind, which can sometimes pick up considerably on the open lakes.

May is usually the month when the weather starts to change. Temperatures between 12 and 18 degrees are normal. Nature is in full bloom, and the weather becomes more stable. May often features longer stretches of nice weather, interspersed with the occasional rain shower.

June already feels almost like summer. With temperatures between 15 and 20 degrees, it’s wonderful to be out on the water. We still consider the first half of June to be the early season.

Water Temperature and Swimming

Let’s be honest: the water is still cold in April and May. The water temperature ranges from 10 to 16 degrees. Fortunately, there are alternatives. Many villages along the waterways have a swimming pool. Starting in mid-June, swimming in the lakes becomes more realistic.

Daylight and Cruising Times

A big advantage: the days are getting longer quickly. In April, you already have over 14 hours of daylight, and in May, that increases to 16 hours. That means long days on the water without any rush. Those long evenings are magical. The light takes on a warm glow, and you can chat endlessly about your day while the sun slowly sets.

Bridges and Locks

The boating season officially starts on April 1. From that moment on, most bridges are staffed again. In the spring, bridge operators are often more relaxed than during the busy high season. They have time for a chat and are happy to offer tips on your route.

What should you bring for a spring boat trip?

Good preparation starts with the right luggage. For spring, remember to dress in layers and pack a little more rather than a little less.

Layered Clothing

In the morning, put on several layers that you can take off during the day. A T-shirt as a base layer, a fleece sweater over that, and a windbreaker or rain jacket on top works perfectly. A good jacket is worth its weight in gold. It doesn’t have to be raining, but a protective layer against the wind makes all the difference between being cold and being comfortable.

Petra’s tip, based on years of experience: “Pack one more warm outfit than you think you’ll need. It’s better to have an extra sweater in your closet than to regret it on a chilly evening.”

Spring-specific items

  • Sunburn: Water reflects sunlight. Apply sunscreen thoroughly.
  • Sunglasses: The glare from the water can be tiring on your eyes.
  • Blankets: Perfect for sitting outside when it cools down a bit.
  • Hot Beverages: A thermos of tea or coffee is wonderful during a morning cruise.
  • Extra clothes for children: Children love to play by the water.
  • Waterproof shoes: The decks can be slippery after rain.

Which boating routes are the most beautiful in the spring?

Some routes are especially beautiful in the spring.

  1. Frisian Lakes Route

The classic route is perfect for spring boaters. It’s suitable for beginners, offers plenty of variety, and features easily accessible docking spots. The trees along the banks are in bloom, and you can explore Sneek, Sloten, Workum, and IJlst at your own pace. You can complete a lovely loop in three days, but you can extend it to seven days. For novice boaters, this is the ideal introduction to the waters of Friesland.

  1. The Alde Feanen

For nature lovers, this area is a must-see in the spring. Bird migration is in full swing. Herons are nesting, black-tailed godwits are calling, and if you’re lucky, you might spot a marsh harrier or even a bald eagle. This area calls for a different way of boating: no rush, no schedule. Perfect for families with young children, nature photographers, and anyone seeking peace and quiet.

  1. Lits-Lauwersmeer Route

For the slightly more experienced boater, the route to Lauwersmeer is a wonderful spring option. Lauwersmeer is a birdwatcher’s paradise. In the spring, you’ll see huge flocks of geese, ducks, and waders. The route takes five to seven days. Please note: in strong winds, Lauwersmeer can be rough, but on beautiful spring days, it’s absolutely stunning.

Special Spring Events

King’s Day on April 27 is a big event in the harbor towns. Orange decorations, flea markets, and a festive atmosphere everywhere. In May, street fairs and spring markets are held regularly in various villages. Check the event calendars in advance and plan your route accordingly.

The Benefits and Considerations at a Glance

Benefits of Spring Boating

  • Peace and Space: You’ll have the waters almost all to yourself
  • Nature: Blossoms, young animals, bird migration
  • Flexible bookings: Weekend, midweek, and last-minute bookings available
  • More affordable: 20–25% difference compared to peak season
  • Authenticity: Meet locals, not just tourists

Points to Consider

The weather is more unpredictable. That’s not a problem if you plan accordingly, but it helps to be flexible with your schedule. Swimming from the boat is limited due to the cold water temperature. Some facilities may have limited hours of operation in the early preseason.

Is spring boating right for you?

You’re an ideal spring boater if you enjoy peace and quiet, value nature and authenticity more than guaranteed swimming weather, and are flexible enough to adjust your plans to the weather. For novice skippers, spring might just be the very best time to get started.

Tips from Yachtcharter Wetterwille

After 20 years of welcoming guests, we’ve noticed clear patterns among spring travelers. Many returning guests deliberately choose May because they’ve come to appreciate the tranquility of the early season. Some even prefer the early season to July or August.

A common tip from experienced guests: Pack one more warm outfit than you think you’ll need. The evenings can be cooler than expected, and an extra sweater will save you from disappointment.

Flexibility is worth its weight in gold during a spring boating trip. Don’t pack every day full—leave room for adjustments. If the weather is beautiful, you can stay out on the water longer. If it rains, you can explore a charming little town instead.

Check the weather forecast shortly before you go. Spring weather forecasts more than three days in advance are often unreliable. It’s better to make your specific plans a day or two in advance.
